Supporting Enterprise Education at Hartcliffe

Capture the Market is a business game designed to support Enterprise Education and enable pupils to practice Keyskills. Teams of pupils form a company, with the aim of designing, manufacturing and selling products, to make a profit. The basic game lasts for approximately two-hours followed by time for pupils to review how their team performed during the game and the key skills used.

At the end of July, Rolls-Royce ran the game at Hartcliffe Engineering Community College (HECC) for approximately 150 year 9 students as part of the school’s Engineering Week. Financial planning was vital to enable teams to buy materials from the suppliers. Each team’s accountant was responsible for borrowing and repaying money from the bank, with the threat of bankruptcy if the loans were not repaid. The salesperson from each team had the demanding and responsible role of negotiating contracts for the team’s products with the buyers.

Rolls-Royce Learning and Development Advisor Dave Coles ran the game and was impressed by the way the negotiations were conducted. Dave said: “The teams produced some very innovative products which were made to a high standard of quality. This enabled the salespersons from each team to negotiate very good prices from the buyers for the product they were selling. The buyers were impressed with the way the sales personnel handled the negotiations of the contract, “They knew the price they wanted and negotiated around that price hard and fair” was just one of the comments from the buyers.”
